How to Enrich your perspective about Life and Work

As I used to share with my readers in previous posts, all the ideas written in my articles are just my personal thoughts and opinions. Those thoughts were partially tested by myself and in certain situations to which I exposed myself. Also, some of my thoughts were formed and refined thanks to my observations and talks with people around me.

I have to acknowledge that the last 4 years were definitely a hard time for me. I find it hard because everything in my life dramatically changed and turned around. I failed and I used to deal with the fact that I was such a failure.

I got frustrated, desperate, and terrified. I didn’t know why! I still worked hard and worked 100% with my soul and body, but I was kicked out of the game of life. I wanted to escape from that terrible feeling by struggling and fighting against the cruel waves of life.

I got lost!

“I failed the first time when I agreed to obey my parents to choose the major I didn’t like!

I failed the second time when I saw myself as a star at my first job!

I failed the third time when I put my trust in the wrong person!”

– Derek Nguyen-

When I admit that I failed in the past, I do not mean that I start complaining or reciting my old stuff. Simply, I want to share the catalyst that helped me change my perspective about Life & Work.  That is INFORMATION.

I strongly believe that my sharing is just one of a billion stories you might find on the Internet or around. However, I want to enlighten you with my own information processing framework.

Big Question: How can you well manage and utilize the information around you to serve yourself?

Concern 1:  Input Management

MIS is a concept and term in a subject that I learned in my MBA program. It refers to the Information Systems that an enterprise owns to serve its daily business operations. However, when I approached those concepts I learned quite much about how to effectively manage my daily inputs.

Let me make it clear to you with the figure below

Every decision that you make daily is the result of your information processing task which mainly depends on how fast, accurate, and trustable your inputs are.

Question 1: How can you well manage your inputs?

That was the first question I kept asking myself. The term is not too hard to understand, however, to deeply recognize what it is might be quite challenging. The problem can be radically solved when you can identify the components contributing to your daily inputs.

Here below are commonly seen factors you might find relevant to your cases:

  • [objects] People whom you directly or indirectly interact with in Life & Work,
  • [tasks] Planned actions that you are supposed to do in Life & Work to satisfy the objects,
  • [rules] Procedures and Principles that direct or govern the objects and tasks.

All these three factors above will lead you to the final results labeled Life or Work Project Outcomes.

What should you do when you finish listing down all objects, tasks, and rules? The answer is to structure the inputs by mapping all of the factors together.

For example: I am a language instructor, and I have to interact with 2 types of students every day at work: college students and worker learners. College students and Worker learners are the focused objects. They carry out distinctive information which can reveal who they are, what they want, and how they behave. Actually, the two types of learners will behave differently. They come to me because of different purposes which are well reflected in the tasks we do and accomplish together. Of course, to finish the given tasks together, we need to comprehend and strictly follow the tasks’ hidden rules including principles or procedures.

After mapping them together, what I can get is the big picture of my responsibilities, the big picture will be the basis for my later decisions or actions if I can collect enough information, filter it, and get useful data to process the next steps; finally, I can gain knowledge information to make decisions on my own.

That’s the way a typical person is meant to go through to make a decent choice or decision. Be good at managing the inputs!

Concern 2: Communications

If inputs help you collect information, then get data to serve specific problems, and finally gain the knowledge information about an event or a person. Communications will divert your attention to 3 key things:

  • Network (the wider your network is, the better information you might get to serve yourself)  and Information Processing Speed (the more effective your listening and information processing skills are, the more efficient you will be in communications)
  • Hardware (voice, postures, facial expressions, eye contact)
  • Software (aid tools used in your communications)

There is no doubt that quality communications can bring us back quality feedback and responses which can contribute much to refine or reinforce the existing information we have in our data warehouse. Make good use of communications in Life & Work!

Question 2: How can you receive, perceive, store, and analyze information effectively to serve your communications?

Concern 3: Yourself

If you see yourself at the center of your processing unit, you cannot say something like:

  • I just learn from others and my situations and then I can better myself.
  • I will enhance and develop my communication skills, then I can better my viewpoints.
  • I will try hard and do my best to better my circumstances.

These statements are not totally wrong, but they cannot make you on track or take proper action. If possible, I suggest make some adjustments and then you might say:

  • I learn the information about the objects, related task and rules to interact with them effectively; from that I can better my understanding about what I am meant to do.
  • I can draw my social network, and imagine how I perceive information and process them silently in my head. Also, I notice how long it takes to finish one processing command in different situations.
  • I am able to us tools as well as apply  what I learned to control my voice, postures, facial expressions and eye contact to make proper effects in communications.

Till now, I bet that you can see the main factor to enrich your perspective in Life & Work which is how you can empirically apply the two factors of Input Management and Communications.

Question 3: How can you better your viewpoints?

You can give it a though, a try and then a test to see how well my proposal fits your case! Learn how you work properly, then you can adjust it.

Good luck and Enjoy yourself!
