Sitting in a cinema screen hall alone watching the most recommended Taiwanese movie of Pride Month titled “A Balloon’s Landing” on a Monday morning was such an incredible experience. It brought me both fear and excitement. Occupying the entire hall and not being interfered with by anyone helped me deeply feel and think about every scene in the movie.
“See you there, at the place where fireworks glow!” – The message written at the back of a photo ended the movie with a bitter regret and unfulfilled promise. And it touched my heart and left me in a pile of thoughts!

Have you ever asked yourself about the equation of life? Have you ever thought Maths can relate to your life more than you already knew? No matter what your answers will be, it’s the truth that you are supposed to juggle with calculations for the rest of your life since the date you were born! Additions, Subtractions, Multiplications, and Divisions are the most basic but powerful ever.
THE EQUATION OF LIFE: NAVIGATING THROUGH THE BASIC CALCULATIONS
Watching the movies for 100 minutes, I couldn’t stop myself from linking the possible message sent to the audience by the movie director with what might happen in real life.
TRUST and LOVE
Trust and Love are the two greatest concepts of all time. Also, they are considered “indispensable spices of life”. Trust and Love require time and mutually constructive effort. They are the product of a multiplication where you can find two important elements such as Sharing as a multiplicand and Sincerity as a multiplier.
The two male characters – A Xiang was an orphan, and Tian Yu lost his parents when he was in his teens – started their own story through a hundred letters over the years; the letters were the means they chose to share thoughts and motivate each other. Obviously, the intimacy and connection between two strangers who were pen pals came from the two basic factors Sharing and Sincerity; it sounds simple but it’s hard to find these factors in a hectic world driven by personal profits.
Through the story, I learned that multiplication is not multiplication, it reminds me of Accumulation. What on earth that requires “accumulation” is the product of multiplication indeed.
PLAN and ACTUALITY
People seem to get lost when they are trying to create equality between “Planned” and “Actual”. This issue might be easier to happen in business rather than in life. Sometimes, you can find somebody who easily gets a result greater than 1, and also you can find another who always gets a result less than 1. What makes the result greater than 1 or less than 1?
It is said that the sorrow comes from a division where the dividend is what you actually acquire in real life and the divisor is what you planned. This kind of calculation represents the ratio of two things or two groups of things. It shows us how well we are in proximity to what we expect.
In the movie, the men were heading to places called “Paradise”. Tian Yu followed his pen pal’s suggestion to search Whale Bay with the expectation of seeing the paradise and making his wishes come true. At the same time, A Xiang absorbed and digested every single word from Tian Yu and found a way to move to live in Taipei with the hope of having a better life. However, they did not know that what they planned and achieved were completely different because of what they had never expected called “Outer Forces”.
Plan and Actuality seem close to each other, but they are distantly placed on the two ends connected by obstacles and challenges.
POSSESSION and LOST
Somebody told me that whenever I had one thing, I would lose another. I used to wonder about its accuracy, but I now believe it.
Tian Yu and A Xiang lost their parents and they found each other as pen pals. An Xiang lost his life to protect his pen pal’s life. Tian Yu knew everything behind the scenes after he lost his pen pal. All the events woven in the story follow the mechanism of Gaining and Losing. They perfectly represent the two basic calculations that we learned in grade 1: Addition and Subtraction.
If Addition brings you more, Subtraction will take something away from you. They perfectly succeed each other and create what we call “Balance in Life and Trade-off in Business”.
Addition reminds us of the total of things we’ve got at the moment, whereas Subtraction tells us the number of things we give away or lose to achieve something else in life. The whole process requires a lot of thought and effort. Sometimes, regrets are the errors in addition and subtraction we make in life.
The Equation that We spend our entire life looking into
If I tell you that the equation of life you have been searching for years might be the product of 4 basic calculations you learned when you were in primary school, do you believe me?
Sometimes the simplest things come from the most basic ones that we cannot figure out. Instead of searching for something magnificent, try your best to master the four basic calculations mentioned above.
“We are parallel lines and never intersect. However, somehow, if we meet each other one day, it’s fate. Live with no regrets and Never leave any unfulfilled promises! And to make it come true, be good at Maths.”- Derek Nguyen.
