The Impact of Immersion in Living Your Own Life

What is the difference between “Doing things” and “Doing things with a real Immersion”?

People are nourishing an unfounded belief that they can learn something new when they have exposure to events or things coming into their lives. Unluckily, it is not what they expected. “Experiencing Things in Life” cannot definitely bring them the “Comprehensive and Profound” Knowledge they are looking for. Instead, they are required to have “A Real Immersion” – the key to opening up their horizons.

So, what does “Immersion” mean in this context? What contributes to ” Immersion”? How can you do things with a real immersion?

What does Immersion mean?

If you look up the word in a dictionary, you can easily find its  definition below:

Immersion (in something) is the state of being completely involved in something

With the meaning, you can also find some common concepts like:

  • The Immersion Method,
  • The Immersion Effectiveness,
  • Live a Life of Immersion, and so on.

When I think of the word – Immersion, I wonder what impacts it truly has on different aspects of human life e.g. Learning, Working, and Living…

At the same time, two famous sayings are coming up into my mind while I am writing down these lines. One was said by John Dewey – an American philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer; and the other was Hegel’s assertion.

  1. “We do not learn from experience… we learn from reflecting on experience.”

  2.  “Quantity changes lead to Quality change”

Why does “Immersion” matter?

As mentioned above, to complete the meaning of this word, it required the state of being completely involved in things you are learning, doing, and working on. In other words, Immersion is not simply indicating what you like; but it should be what you want instead.

In a previous article, I used to explain and differentiate the two words together. “LIKE” is the feeling that you have when observing somebody and then you like to achieve what they achieved, acquire what they acquired, or look like what they look now. The feeling of “Liking” is not strong enough, and you are just an outsider in this context. You observe it, watch it, and want to touch it; however; when you approach it by yourself, you might give up sooner than you think and then switch to something new and more interesting. That explains why a vast majority are wasting time and effort these days.

In contrast to LIKE, Want refers to something Clearer and Firmer. Coming with WANT is a real motivation and specific needs as well as plan actions. Somehow it can be seen as the necessary condition to bring a real Immersion into your actions. In other words, Immersion appears when you actually know what you want.

The Immersion Method in Learning a Language

the Immersion Method is considered the most successful method which helps learners acquire their second language. As for young children, Immersion here means to give them “a language bath”. They are supposed to hear, speak, and use the language spontaneously; from real exposure to the language, they gradually absorb the language and improve their comprehension of the target language. They do not have to deal with many concerns related to structures and grammar like adults.

And it is believed that this method just works only on children because their first language has fully developed yet. It might be true or just half-true.

What about Adult Learners? It is said that adults are significantly influenced and distracted by their first-language-related grammar and structures when they learn another new language. They do not accept the language naturally like children do; also they force themselves to find out the root of everything they are learning or rush to learn all the things at a time. As a result, they do not have time to immerse themselves in the new language properly.

Actually, “A language bath” still works on adults if they are well aware of what they want throughout certain stages of their language acquisition.

The Awareness here is included:

  • The entire language learning process
  • The number of learning stages
  • The objectives of each stage
  • The KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) of language practice in each stage
  • The acceptance of practice results in each stage

Immersion in Learning can be interpreted as knowing what you want from learning and seeing clearly who you are going to be then. When you achieve it, you will be able to enjoy your learning journey, bear and survive hardship.

What makes Immersion Effectiveness?

To see the components of Immersion and measure Immersion Effectiveness, let’s brainstorm what Immersion a person should get in his or her daily life.

  • Immersion in an Experience
  • Immersion in Relationships
  • Immersion in the Workplace
  • Immersion in Social Interactions
  • Immersion in Personal Growth

Whatever aspects you have to deal with, there are key elements to gather before having any kind of Immersion  such as

  • Awareness: The ability to recognize and identify what you definitely want to achieve or acquire at work or in life.
  • Actions  (or KPIs): The set of key actions leading you to your target. The actions are measurable and easily followed on a daily basis.
  • Assessments: The set of criteria you use to assess how closer you are to your target. The assessment should be clear and transparent; if possible you need to create a rating scale or a rubric table to measure your performance.

If you can strictly follow the aforementioned triple-A, you will be able to sharpen your awareness and then help you further engage in what you are doing. On the contrary, you will gradually lose your immersion if your awareness of what you are working on is not enough. It’s a well-known rule!

I bet that you will say that it’s easier said than done when reaching this line. Instead of keep explaining things to you, I would like you to answer one question.

What are you longing for now and without it, you cannot develop or might be kicked out of the game of life over time?

If you find the answer , let’s start with what you want and take proper action.

Remember to break down things into smaller pieces , accept the result of each stage, and not to rush!
