How to become a “Real” Team Player in 9 Steps

There is no doubt that teamwork has been one of the key criteria that learners and workers of all generations must acquire. Living in the 21st century with the concept that the world is flat, both businesses and individuals are witnessing the increase in Uploading, Informing, Outsourcing, and Offshoring. People, I believe,  can work with other people on more stuff than ever before in the train of the development of technology and society.

“None of us is as smart as all of us.” – Ken Blanchard

Teamwork is not simply the combination of two simple words “Team” and “Work”. It means a thousand times more than that. What learners and workers are supposed to see is something beyond the lexicon.

Let me describe what Teamwork involves in the diagram below:

As you can see, Being a good team player is not a simple thing. It requires many skills at the same time. When you are put in a team and are told to WORK with OTHERS & TOGETHER, what could be your first reaction? Do you still remember?

Let’s say that 70% will reply what the hell where I am now and what I am supposed to do with those guys, 20% will whisper to themselves just to join and see what will be happening then; 10% will start immediately with their ideas or opinions. If you have a start like this, do you think that you can achieve the success you want?

I just want to prove that Working in a team is not like that you gather as many people as you can and then make them work together. In other words, I am seeing Working in a team as Negotiating with Different Parties at the same time. Therefore, you, of course,  will have to put in blood, sweat, and tears.

In general, the skill set you need to equip is included:

  • Goal Setting Skill
  • Self-disciplined
  • Sympathy
  • Presentation skills
  • Listening to understand
  • Feedback and Feedforward Skills
  • Problem-solving
  • Time and Task Management

and never forget to “Have Unbiased Opinions”.

As I mentioned before, Working in a team is like Negotiating with Different Parties at the same time; and the negotiation starts when all parties are “R-E-A-D-Y”, in which you can find all of your members:

  • Responsible
  • Energetic
  • Attentive
  • Dedicated
  • Yielding if needed

And don’t forget that the sufficient condition is “SHARING THE SAME FINAL TARGET AND BENEFITS”.

If you are still with me and see the things aforementioned. Congratulations. You have “A GOOD START”!
